Hatching brine shrimp (Artemia) is a fun and rewarding process, especially for aquarium hobbyists or anyone looking for a nutritious live feed for fish. Here's a short guide to help you get started.

Materials Needed:

• Brine shrimp eggs (often called cysts)
• Hatchery or container (such as a 1L soda bottle or specialized hatchery)
• Air pump (to provide aeration)
• Salt (non-iodized, aquarium salt works best)
• Water (preferably dechlorinated)
• Light source (optional, but helpful)

Step-by-Step Process:

1. Prepare the Hatchery:

   • Cut the top off a soda bottle or use a pre-made hatchery.
   • Fill it with about 500ml-1L of dechlorinated water.
   • Add salt at a concentration of 1.5 to 2 tablespoons per liter of water.

2. Add Brine Shrimp Eggs:

   • Add approximately 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of brine shrimp eggs to the salty water.

3. Aeration:

   • Attach the air pump to ensure constant water movement and oxygenation. This will prevent the eggs from settling and ensure better hatching rates.

4. Optimal Conditions:

   • Keep the water temperature between 25-30°C (77-86°F).
   • Use a light source for about 12-16 hours per day, as light can stimulate hatching.
   • After about 24-36 hours, you should begin to see tiny, swimming brine shrimp hatchlings, also known as nauplii.

5. Harvesting:

   • Turn off the air pump after 48 hours. The hatched shrimp will gather near the light source or at the top, while unhatched cysts sink to the bottom.
   • Use a small siphon or turkey baster to collect the hatched brine shrimp.
   • Rinse the shrimp with fresh water before feeding them to your fish.

Tips:

• If you're not using all the brine shrimp immediately, store them in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours.
• You can use a fine mesh net to separate the shrimp from unhatched eggs more easily.
• Do not feed unhatched eggs or egg shells to fish or fish fry because they are very difficult for them to digest and cause problems in their digestion.
