xIntroducing AXOLOTLS - The Perfect Addition to Your Aquatic Collection
Axolotls are one of the best pets in this Hobby!
They have a lot of personality and they can be a very long term friend(pet).
Caring for Axolotls is considered fairly easy, if you’re experienced enough with keeping fish, they’re not much different, instead they can be more hardy than fish.
But, just because they’re hardy, doesn’t mean they are demanding.
Axolotls need lots of space to explore and wander in the tank. They grow upto 30cm in length (yes! its big) They like to have a lot of hides, and tunnels in the tank, but make sure to choose the hides they do not get stuck in.
I like to create natural Aquascapes for them with Natural Driftwood, Live plants and large pebbles as substrate.
Anything smaller than 3-4cm may have a chance of being gobbled up by these four legged fish!
They need adequate filtration in the tank and aeration is also a must. They do not like warm temperatures, so best you keep them in tank temperatures below 21C and over 16C.
In summer months, depending on how cold or warm your house is, they may need an aquarium chiller/ or aquarium cooling fan or you may need to put some frozen water bottles to cool their water down if it gets too hot!
If the water temperature naturally gets over 25C, investing in a chiller is best. If it doesn’t get over 22C, Aquarium cooling fans are also good!
They need to be fed upto twice or thrice a day when they’re juveniles and once they get around 10cm, once or twice a day feeding works well.
For adults, we only feed once a day, some times frozen bloodworms, sometimes live earth worms, sometimes pellets and once a week nothing(fasting day!)
If you’re going on a holiday for a few days, you can buy high quality minnows from your reputed shop for the Axolotls to eat!
Mostly aquarium bought feeder fish are abused in this hobby and they usually come with diseases so if feeding feeder fish, they need to be quarantined and treated before feeding to any fish/ axolotls.
Yes, it is a bit cruel, but we only feed top quality food to our pets, so we only feed our locally bred Mountain Cloud Minnows to the Axolotls we have if we’re going away for a few days. We just leave around 5 in the tank and once the Axolotls are desperate enough, they’ll eat them.
Of course if you’re away for over 5 days, you need to have someone look after your fish tank for you, and you can have them feed a couple of worms to the Axolotls 😃
So, Good filtration is a must, tank size needs to be at least a 2ft (70L) for 1 Axolotl for it to be happy, but always aim for at least a 3ft 90cm Aquarium for them!
