Live Plants
Live plants are one of the best investments you can make for a healthy, thriving aquarium.
Why keep live plants?
- Natural filtration: plants take up nitrates and other waste compounds produced by fish, helping keep water quality stable between water changes.
- Oxygenation: through photosynthesis, plants add oxygen to the water during daylight hours, benefiting fish and shrimp.
- Shelter and breeding grounds: dense planting gives fry, shrimp and shy fish places to hide and feel secure, which can reduce stress and support natural breeding behaviour.
- Algae control: healthy plants compete with algae for the same nutrients and light, helping keep unwanted algae growth in check.
Choosing the right plants for your setup
Lighting, water parameters and tank mates all affect how well a plant will do in your aquarium. Popular, beginner-friendly options include Java Fern, Anubias and various low-tech carpeting plants — all of which tolerate a range of lighting conditions. If you're setting up a high-tech, CO2-injected tank, we also carry more demanding species for aquascapers wanting a fuller carpet or colour contrast.
